Some of the most rewarding and memorable experiences for girls at Fintona have been achieved through their involvement and participation in our Sport Program.
There are many excellent reasons that Fintona girls choose to be involved in sport – it is fun, competitive, social and contributes to a healthy and balanced lifestyle. A wide range of sports is offered at varying levels of achievement. All girls have opportunities to proudly represent Fintona, forming friendships and a unique team spirit.
The Physical Education curriculum at Fintona focuses on learning about the benefits of physical activity. We believe that incorporating recreational and competitive sporting activities enhances the students' overall health and wellbeing. Specific skill acquisition and physical fitness are important components of learning in this area, as is understanding that each student's contribution to a team is valued.
Fintona competes as a member of the Girls School Victoria (GSV) Inter-school Sport competition. Girls, from Years 7 to 12, are encouraged to perform in a spirit of friendly competitiveness while aspiring for individual and team excellence. The following sports are offered through the GSV competition:
|TERM 1||TERM 2||TERM 3||TERM 4|
|Diving||Australian Rules Football||Athletics||Basketball|
In Years 5 and 6, all students compete in an inter-school sport competition. This affords the girls an opportunity to learn the rules and develop key match play knowledge before entering the GSV competitions from Year 7. Matches commence at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.
Colour, enthusiastic participation and high team spirits are the hallmarks of our House Carnival days. Summer and winter house carnivals receive passionate support across all year levels as students endeavor to contribute as many points as possible for their House. Swimming/diving, athletics, cross-country and netball events also feature as part of the overall House competition, which is contested to win the House Cup at the conclusion of the school year.
For general match information, please refer to the Fixtures located on the Sports page on inFintona.
Rowing is a unique sport that requires individual determination and demands a high level of teamwork. A Learn to Row Program is introduced to all Year 8 students during Term 3 as part of the Physical Education curriculum. This experience enables interested girls to join the Rowing team. In Terms 3 and 4 of Year 8 and Term 1 of Year 9, the squad undertakes training which culminates in competing at the Head of Schoolgirls’ Regatta. This event is located on the Barwon River Geelong during March.
The Rowing program at Fintona aims to produce well prepared, fit, skilful and successful crews and to develop team members' self-esteem as well as a love of the sport. Fintona uses the facilities of the Yarra Yarra Rowing Club to store its boats and as the base for the on-water program.
Fintona rowing encourages a family commitment through Friends of Rowing so that parents, rowers and rowers' siblings can share the many high points as well as the challenges of each season.
