Best Speaker DAV Women's Competition 2022
Congratulations to Maya (Year 12) who was named best overall speaker of the DAV Women's Competition in 2022.
The DAV Women’s Competition is a debating tournament held exclusively for women, with the aim of supporting and encouraging female-identifying students. Historically women have been underrepresented in debating and as such the DAV offers this unique opportunity for them to further develop their skills in a friendly environment outside of the main Schools Competition. Students register individually and are randomly allocated to a team of three on arrival, participating in three secret topic debates. For many students this is the first opportunity to debate with others out of their own schools and their first time working on secret topics, all of which provide exceptional experience for the Schools Competition and trialling for the Victorian State Team.
For the last four years, Fintona has hosted this exciting competition. Eight Fintona students from Years 9 to 12 participated meaning almost every team developed on the day had a Fintona student present. The day was a whirlwind of secret topics, preparation and nail-biting debate.
At the end of the day, the winning team and best speakers are revealed. We are pleased to announce that Maya (Year 12) was named overall best speaker of the competition. Maya joined debating in 2021, so to win this competition after only a year of debating demonstrates her hard work and determination to succeed. Congratulations Maya!
