Meet Linh | Year 9
Year 9 student Linh is the co-captain of Fintona’s Green Team, a musician and composer, and someone who is equally passionate about the study of language, music and considered design.
Alongside her core subjects, this year Linh chose to study French, Latin, Design and Music.
‘I decided to take Design because it’s an interesting topic. It’s like unpacking an IKEA manual. We’re making our own chairs at the moment. Latin is good to learn about the history of English, French is a language that I can use and it is a really fun language to speak.’
From a young age, Linh learnt violin and piano outside of school, and in Year 5 her music teacher recognised her potential and inspired her to begin learning the drums. Linh now plays violin and drums in orchestras, ensembles and bands at Fintona, and is also teaching herself to play guitar and ukulele, ‘that’s it for now’ she says with a chuckle.
‘What’s a better way to relax than just hitting some drums? Violin is more technical, which I also enjoy.
‘It’s kind of like ballet in hip-hop, ballet being violin and hip-hop being drums.’

Year 9 student at Fintona
In Year 6, Linh found her passion for environmental causes and fondly remembers the first fundraiser she created for WWF.
‘There were a lot of bush fires in New South Wales at the time. At 12 years old, I decided I wanted to do something. I asked my friend to help me and we set up a fundraiser to raise money for WWF for the koalas in New South Wales.
‘I think we raised $300. I didn’t realise the impact at the time, but it was really special for me and I decided I wanted to make an impact for the environment.’
Now the co-captain of Fintona’s Green Team, Linh hopes to leave a lasting legacy at Fintona by sharing her knowledge about sustainability and encouraging younger students to take action on climate issues.
‘Our goal for the Green Team is to inspire the younger students, and help them understand what climate change is and the little things we can do to solve it.
‘We are really hoping that we can inspire the younger girls in the Green Team that it is our generation that has to look after the planet. We are trying to pass on our knowledge in easy-to-understand ways.’
Linh values the supportive community at Fintona and how passionate her teachers are about their subject areas, which she says makes her feel like she can do anything.
‘Every single day at Fintona is an ideal day… Every single subject, I learn something new. It doesn’t matter what subject it is; I always enjoy it.’
